Whitewater Rafting – June
18-21 at Kernville, CA We will drive to Kernville on Thursday so we can raft on Friday – this is 1000% more fun
than rafting Saturday with hordes of people. June 11 is the last day of school for Carlsbad (we leave 1 week later).
We will return on Saturday or Sunday, depending on what everyone wants to do. The approximate cost will be $200
per person, including rafting fees, camping, food, gas, etc. Another benefit of rafting Friday is that we can take
a large group of people, so Dads, Moms and siblings are welcome. We will camp at one of the Forest Service campgrounds
near Kernville. We are considering splitting into 2 groups this year: a younger group to do the moderate run we did
last year and an older group to do a more challenging run upriver. Scouts doing the moderate run will experience rafts
and (inflatable) kayaks and have the chance to earn the Whitewater merit badge.
Please let me know if you would like to attend, how many people and if you prefer
moderate or challenging. - Mataguay Summer Camp – June 28 to July 4 (near Warner Springs) Alternate
summer camp (e.g. if you have a schedule conflict with the Circle X dates). Cost will be: $300 – mistletoe sales
count toward this. http://camping.sdicbsa.org/MSR/SummerCamp.asp
Please let Paul Krebs know (krebsp@dslextreme.com) if you want to attend camp at Mataguay. - Circle X Summer Camp – July 26 to August 1 (near Lake Arrowhead) Primary
summer camp. Cost will be $375 ($350 if we don’t get new t-shirts) – mistletoe sales count
toward this. First payment ($100) due: February 9, Second
payment $100 due April 13, Final payment $175 due June 8. We now have 28 scouts registered for Circle
X (pending approval from camp to expand from 25).
Circle X is part of the Forest Lawn Scout Reservation (http://www.flsr.org), operated by the Los Angeles Area Council, and located here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=34.2511,-117.127&spn=0.3,0.3&t=p&q=34.2511,-117.127 in the San Bernardino mountains, near Lake Arrowhead. The facilities include: Firebird Lake with canoeing, kayaking,
and row boats, a pool with a waterslide, astronomy observatory, 40 ft. climbing wall, shooting sports, and horseback riding.
There is a Trail to First Class (Pathfinder) program for younger scouts, a COPE course (team building, climbing, high
wire, zip line) for older scouts (13+) and several different overnight options. - Sierra Trek – August 8-16 (near Yosemite) This is a 6 day backpacking
trip through the high Sierras, lead by Steve Blue and Mike Heck. This year we plan to hike the John Muir Trail (JMT)
from Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite Park down to Devils Postpile, near Mammoth, CA, a distance of about 35 miles. The cost will be around $150 per person, depending on gas prices, etc. There will be mandatory planning meetings
and at least one “shake down” trip prior to the trek. This is a moderately challenging trip and some previous
experience (e.g. backpack training at Mataguay) is desirable. It’s open to all scouts, BUT you must be
strong enough to carry a 30 pound (minimum) pack at high altitude. It’s also open to parents, IF we don’t
enough scouts to fill up the group (parents must be strong enough to carry a 40-50 pound pack at high altitude). We
have a permit for 12 hikers (group size is limited by the Forest Service) and we have one
space remaining.
Please let me
know soon if you want to participate in the Sierra Trek. - Cub
Scout Day Camp Applications now available to work at our District’s Cub Scout Day Camp this Summer –

Fund Raiser Troop 750 has joined up with Escrip.com as a convenient way to earn money for the
Troop and for our boys. Many of you may already have signed up for eScrip for your school or for your church.
eScrip allows you to add up to 3 groups which can benefit from your spending. Signing up for eScrip is easy. Log onto www.eScrip.com, and you'll see the 4 steps to sign up. In Step 1, you'll be asked about which group you'd like to sign up to
support. Our name in the eScrip system is Troop
750 Boy Scouts of America, Group ID 500021384.
A small percentage of each of your purchases will benefit our Troop, but over time the savings will build up without
you even noticing. Groups that are not a school or a church do not benefit from spending at Vons or Safeway, but there
are plenty of other ways we can benefit, such as: Shopping at Macy's, eScrip Online Mall, eScrip Dining, eScrip Visa
card, eScrip recycling.
There are two links on the home page of our web site. The one on the left is
for registering with Escrip. The one
on the right is for shopping online. Please note that the online shopping link says "Escrip Mall",
but it's not their own mall, just a gateway to the actual online shopping sites. You will still be shopping at Amazon
or Barnes & Noble or whatever and paying exactly the same price. But a percentage of each purchase will (typically
2-3%) will benefit Troop 750! You must go through this link for the troop to benefit. Also you do NOT need to be registered with Escrip for your online purchases to benefit the
troop. Paul Krebs is coordinating this effort (thank you!), contact him at: krebsp@dslextreme.com 2009
Summer Camp Staff If you’ll be 14 or older next Summer, you can spend 8 weeks at Scout
Camp and get paid for doing it! Scout camps are now accepting applications for 2009 camp staff. OK, you won’t
get paid much, but you’ll have a lot of fun teaching other scouts and using the camp facilities. Application
deadline for Mataguay is October 21, 2008. For Mataguay click here For Emerald Bay click here 2009
Summer Planning Dates Tentative dates for planning purposes. All activities depend on sufficient
interest and volunteer leaders to organize/lead.
White water rafting: June 18 – 21 (or maybe June
18 – 20 because June 21 is Father’s Day).
Summer Camp (primary): July 26 to Aug 1 – at
Circle X Ranch (near Lake Arrowhead)
Summer Camp (alternate): June 28 to July 4 – at Mataguay (near
Warner Springs)
Sierra Trek (backpacking): Aug 8 – 16 2010 National Jamboree
National Jamboree is a gathering of thousands of scouts from all over the US, at Ft A.P. Hill, Virginia. Because
it is only held every 4 years, scouts only have one or two opportunities to attend this event. 2010 is also the centennial
celebration of scouting in the US, so this should be an event to remember. Cost is $795 and a $100 deposit is due
by January 31, 2009. Scouts will attend as part of an ad-hoc troop assembled by our Council and spaces are limited.
See the attached flyer for application details. Council flyer here Description of the event here 2010
Philmont Trek Philmont treks are 10 day, 50 – 80 mile backpacking adventures including
stops at staffed camps that offer activities such as shooting, climbing, burro packing, etc. Highly recommended.
See details here:
We applied for a trek in the Summer of 2010 (note Philmont applications are two years in advance and trek spots
are granted by random lottery). Unfortunately we did NOT get in for 2010. We will be
on the waiting list, but we don’t know where yet. (We are actually still on the waiting list for 2009 but pretty
far from the top). Council Newsletter: here Merit Badge
Changes BSA has revised the requirements for 6 merit badges.
Info here. Scout
Uniform Changes BSA has revised the official scout uniform as part of the Centennial celebration.
The new shirt and hat are pretty cool. For some reason they also changed from red shoulder loops and troop numerals
to green shoulder loops and troop numerals. Of course none of the changes are required and it’s not required
that the troop be consistent (we can have some scouts in the old style and some in the new style), but you can’t mix
old and new style insignia on the same shirt. Here is some info about the new uniform items (warning – 6 MB file):
